We’ll go over the best ways to find the perfect heat source for cooking rice. In just a little time, you’ll have so much food that is ready to eat!
This is what makes taking rice as your food item for camping so great. It feeds a crowd! (or makes plenty of leftovers to eat throughout the trip!)

The Cooking Method Matters
The key to successful camping-style rice cooking is finding a method that works best for your situation.
Generally speaking, there are three main methods for cooking rice while camping: open fire, gas stove, and solar ovens.
However, even though those might be the most popular, we’re going to talk about a great way to cook rice with other options, too.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you attempt to cook any rice over the campfire, make sure that you are prepared by gathering all of your supplies.
You will need a pot and lid (preferably made from aluminum or stainless steel), a long-handled spoon or spatula for stirring, a measuring cup for measuring the correct amount of water, and an accurate food thermometer for testing the temperature of the water.
If possible, bring an extra pot in case the fire gets too hot. This way, if something goes wrong with one pot, you’ll still be able to salvage your meal.
Prepare Your Ingredients
Once all of your supplies are gathered and organized, it’s time to start preparing your ingredients.
Measure out 1 cup of rice per person and add it to your pot. Then add enough cold water to cover the rice by approximately 1 inch. Place the lid on top and set aside while you get everything else ready.

What are all the ways to cook rice?
One of the best things about making rice is that you can pick an easy way that works best for you.
When it comes to packing for a road trip or camping trip, I always take a cast iron pot with me. This is one of my favorite cooking methods that gets the best results.
Plus, it’s a great addition to your camp kitchen too. Just add it to your camping gear – trust me.
Cooking Over an Open Fire
When cooking over an open fire pit or campfire, the trick is to use indirect heat while evenly distributing the heat around the bottom of your pot so that the rice cooks evenly without burning.
Start by making a bed of coals using your tinder and kindling and then let them burn down until they turn red-hot.
Place your pot on top of this bed of coals and cover it tightly with aluminum foil or a lid; this will help trap heat inside so that your rice can cook through more quickly and evenly.
If needed, move some of the hot coals around the sides of your pot as well to ensure even heat distribution throughout your dish.
Cooking Over a Gas Stove or Camp Grill
If you plan on bringing a gas stove or camp grill on your camping trip, this is arguably one of the easiest ways to cook up a batch of fluffy white rice.
Just follow these simple steps: measure out 2 cups (or however much you need) of uncooked long-grain white rice into your pan; add 2 1/2 cups (or double whatever amount you used) water; bring mixture to a boil before lowering the flame to low; cover the pan with tight-fitting lid; simmer for 18 minutes; fluff with fork before serving!
The Stovetop Method
This is probably the most common way of cooking rice—and for a good reason. The stovetop method requires just a few simple steps and some basic ingredients like water, salt, and olive oil (optional).
All you have to do is measure out the desired amount of rice and water into a pot or pan and bring it to a boil.
Then reduce the heat to low and cover with a lid for about 15 minutes or until tender. Add salt and oil as desired before serving.
The Microwave Method
For those who don’t have access to an outdoor stove or don’t want to wait long for their food, microwaving your rice might be your best bet.
Measure out your desired amount of uncooked rice into a microwave-safe bowl along with 1 ½ cups of water per cup of uncooked rice.
Cover with plastic wrap or a damp paper towel before popping it in the microwave for 10 minutes on high power or until tender.
Let stand 5 minutes before serving with salt or oil as desired.
The Pressure Cooker Method
If you’re looking for an even faster way to get dinner on the table, then look no further than the pressure cooker method of cooking rice! This method requires only two ingredients (rice + water) plus salt if desired.
Measure 1 cup of uncooked rice into your pressure cooker along with 1 cup of water per cup of uncooked rice plus ½ teaspoon salt (optional).
Securely close the lid according to the manufacturer’s instructions and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes, followed by a natural release for 10 minutes. Turn the knob to venting and let the rest of the pressure release. Quickly remove the lid.
Use a Rice Cooker
This is a great option if you have electric hookups. The rice cooker can easily be plugged in to cook the rice, and then serve it straight from the pot as well. Less dirty dishes!
Use a Camp Stove
Cooking rice over low heat on the grill grate is a great camping experience. Just put it into a dutch oven or a large frying pan, and do your best.
Camp cooking is all about experimenting and figuring it out.

Bring Instant Rice
If you want rice in just a couple of minutes, fast-cooking rice is the best option. It doesn’t take much time at all to make and is something that can be paired easily with other meal ideas.
Bring a range of pans
From a cast iron pan to cast iron pots to skillets, choose the easiest way that you want to cook rice and then make it.

Reheat leftover tasty rice
You can always cook regular rice at home and then bring it on the trip. This is a good idea if you don’t want to pack a lot of other things, and want to reheat and eat.
Using Solar Ovens
Solar ovens are great tools when it comes to outdoor cooking since they don’t require any fuel source other than sunshine and they don’t produce smoke like an open fire does—which means they can be used in all types of weather conditions without creating air pollution!
And yes, you can definitely use them to make tasty batches of fluffy white jasmine rice too!
What is the best rice to cook when camping?
Rice is a staple ingredient that can be the perfect side dish or main course. It has a long shelf life and is perfect for its compact size and food storage abilities.
But which type of rice should you bring? Let’s explore the best types of rice for cooking on your campsite. (short-grain rice and long-grain rice can both be options!)
White Rice
White rice is one of the more popular types of rice used for camping because it is easy to make and it tastes delicious.
It also has a longer shelf life than other types of rice and can be cooked quickly with just water. White rice goes well with almost any type of meal, from grilled meats to vegetable stir-fries.
For an even tastier option, try adding butter or oil for some added flavor!
Brown Rice
If you want to switch things up from white rice during your camping trip, brown rice may be a better option.
Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice but offers more fiber and nutrients that are beneficial when trying to stay healthy while away from home.
Brown rice is a great accompaniment to grilled fish or roasted vegetables – perfect for those campfire meals!

Wild Rice
Wild rice may not be as popular as white or brown varieties since it takes so long to cook (upwards of 45 minutes!). However, if you have the patience and time while camping, wild rice can add an interesting twist to your meals.
Wild rice is packed with vitamins and minerals like magnesium, zinc, manganese, and phosphorus which makes it worth considering for your next camping adventure!
Plus, its nutty flavor will provide an excellent addition to any meal.
What ingredients can be added to cooked rice to make a well-rounded meal?
Not only is it affordable and easy to make, but it also provides an excellent base for creating a wide variety of dishes.
So if you’re looking to spice up your campsite meals, here are some ingredients you can add to cooked rice to make a well-rounded meal!
Meat and Seafood
Adding protein to your cooked rice will give you an instant boost of energy and help you feel full longer.
You can use any meat or seafood, such as chicken, salmon, shrimp, pork, or beef. Just be sure to cook the meat thoroughly before adding it to the cooked rice.
Ground beef is a great way to add some comfort food feelings! You can also chop up cooked hot dogs and add them, too. This is an excellent way to increase the protein source as well.
Vegetables
To add nutrition and color to your meal, throw in veggies like diced carrots, zucchini, onion, bell peppers, spinach, and mushrooms—the possibilities are endless! Plus, they are easy to pack with minimal preparation required.
Beans and Legumes
Beans and legumes are a great source of fiber and protein that make any dish more filling. Add black beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, or lentils for extra flavor and texture.
Fruits
Fresh fruit is always a welcome addition to any dish! Add fresh strawberries or mangoes for sweetness or diced apples or pears for tartness. Dried fruits like raisins work too!

Herbs & Spices
Herbs and spices enhance flavor and provide additional health benefits like antioxidant power and anti-inflammatory properties.
Sprinkle oregano over your cooked rice dish, top with chopped cilantro or basil leaves for brightness, or add red pepper flakes for heat.
Nuts and sauces
Additions like nuts & seeds (pumpkin seeds or cashews), grains (quinoa or barley), and sauces (soy sauce or teriyaki sauce) can also be added according to your preference. The combinations are limitless, so get creative!
Fresh Ingredients
Cilantro is another personal favorite of mine to add to the top of my rice. Chives, too!
Toppings
Don’t forget you can add parmesan cheese as a topping or even stir in some chicken broth instead of water.

Why is rice considered one of the most versatile foods?
Let’s take a closer look at why this unassuming grain has stood the test of time in the camping world.
Rice is Lightweight and Compact
Rice is a great camping food because it takes up very little space. A pound of dry rice fits into a small bag and weighs almost nothing, making it perfect for hikers carrying their food.
Also, because rice doesn’t need to be refrigerated, you don’t have to worry about bringing a cooler or ice packs.
You can bring a few Ziploc bags full of dry rice and store them in your backpack until you’re ready to cook them over your campfire.
It Cooks Quickly and Easily
Another benefit of using rice while camping is that it cooks quickly and easily over an open flame.
All you need is a pot or pan with some water (or broth) and your stove or firepit—and you’re all set!
Depending on the rice you use, it can usually be cooked in just 10-15 minutes without babysitting your stove or constantly stirring the pot.
And once the rice is cooked, you can use it as a base for all kinds of delicious meals like stir fry dishes, burrito bowls, soups, stews…the possibilities are endless!
It’s Nutritious and Delicious
Finally, let’s not forget that rice also happens to be incredibly nutritious as well as delicious! Not only does it provide complex carbohydrates for energy, but it also contains essential vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and potassium.
Plus, because there are so many varieties available (like brown basmati or wild), you can switch up your meal plan daily with something new and exciting!
When it comes to campfire cooking, rice is a good option! Pick up everything you need at the grocery store before launching your trip, and you’ll be packed and ready to go for one of the first camping trips of the season!

As you can see from our guide above, there are several different ways that you can successfully cook delicious batches of fluffy white rice while camping.
Whether you opt for an open fire, gas stove/camp grill, or solar oven approach depends entirely on what gear you have available as well as where exactly you’re heading off to—but no matter which route you take, we hope that our advice has helped get those tummies rumbling with anticipation! Bon Appétit!
