In fact, while I’m going to be giving you a delicious chicken and dumplings recipe down below, let’s dive in a little bit and talk more about how to cook dumplings with a wide variety of cooking methods. (Don’t forget to scroll to the bottom to get the recipe for homemade flour dumplings as well!)
While I’m going to be showing you a hearty chicken and dumplings recipe, there are other dumplings, knowns as Chinese dumplings, that you can cook, too. We love to eat a wide variety of dumplings in our house and we love all of these various cooking methods.
How do you cook fresh dumplings?
For fresh Chinese dumplings, there are really three different ways that you can cook them. You can boil them, pan-fry them, or steam them. (There are three of the more common types of dumplings as well)
To pan-fry dumplings:
All you really need it a hot skillet and a little bit of oil to pan-fry your dumplings. Add the oil to the skillet, drop in your fresh or frozen dumplings and fry them up until the bottoms start to turn a golden-brown. You’ll also want to add in a little bit of water during this time and cover with a lid to make certain that the rest of the dumpling gets cooked (or steamed) all the way through.
People also refer to this type of dumplings as potstickers as well.
To boil dumplings:
Making boiled dumplings is simple and the biggest thing to remember is that you need to make certain that you boil them long enough to get them cooked all the way through. This boiled dumpling recipe is a great example and it gives them that chewy texture and taste that everyone loves.
How to make steamed dumplings:
All you need to do here is add your dumplings to a steamer basket and let it do all the work. This is probably the easiest way to cook Chinese dumplings and they offer a great taste as well.
What are drop dumplings?
This is more of an old-school term that your mom or grandma probably used to refer to their homemade flour dumplings. It’s literally like it sounds: Scoop up a big drop of the flour mixture (or Bisquick) and dump it into the recipe or on a baking pan.
They’re not meant to be pretty but more so hearty and tasty.
Can you make chicken and dumplings with Bisquick?
You actually can. It’s as easy as following the directions on the box, and as you’ll see below, it’s one of the main ingredients used in this drop dumpling recipe.
Are you ready for this homemade dumpling recipe? Now that you know that there is a difference between the term “dumpling”, you’re going to have to choose what type of dumplings and your and family like best. (why not make them all?! We buy some killer frozen dumplings from the store and pan-fry them up all the time!)
