Do you have to thaw frozen raw shrimp before cooking?
Yes, we always do run our shrimp under cold water for about 5 minutes to thaw it out. This is just one of the reasons why I love cooking with shrimp. It’s so quick and simple to unthaw! Once it’s ready, I just toss it into my wok or pan and cook it right up! There’s no real reason to have to plan ahead with shrimp when you can just easily unthaw it within moments.
If you decide to use raw shrimp for this recipe, make certain that you read below on how to cook it.
How do you know when shrimp is done cooking?
Most meats have a telltale look once they’re done cooking and shrimp is no exception. To know if your shrimp is done cooking, you’re going to keep your eyes peeled for a pink exterior and a slightly opaque coloring of the body of the shrimp.
Or you could just be like me and buy shrimp that’s already cooked to perfection for you. Totally up to you.
What happens if you cook shrimp too long?
Just like anything, if you overcook your shrimp, you’re going to have chewy shrimp that’s dried out as well. If your shrimp are bright white and shriveled looking after you’ve cooked them, you more than likely have overcooked your shrimp. While it’s still edible, it’s going to not have as much flavor and be quite chewy or rubbery in texture.
Do you wash shrimp before cooking them?
We do! Sometimes there might be some ice crystals or other things on the outside of the shrimp so we always give our shrimp a good rinsing in cold water before we cook them.
Does shrimp shrink when you cook them?
They do! And there’s really nothing that you can do about it. They’re going to shrink up a little bit and be smaller than they are when they’re frozen or raw. Just keep that in mind when you’re purchasing your shrimp so you can get an idea of how large they’re going to be.
Keep in mind that precooked shrimp won’t have this issue.
Can you make this Instant Pot shrimp recipe gluten-free?
You can! All you need to do is make certain that the ingredients that you’re using are gluten-free. You can swap out the noodles easily for a rice noodle or something else gluten-free and just pay attention to the type of chicken broth that you’re adding in as well. If you have someone in your family that can’t consume gluten, just alter the recipe a tad bit to make it something that they can enjoy as well.

How to make this instant pot shrimp recipe

Instant Pot Shrimp Lo Mein
This Instant Pot Shrimp Lo Mein is simple and delicious.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 8 oz spaghetti pasta broken in half
- 1 cup snow peas
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 1/4 cup red peppers thinly sliced.
- 2 carrots peeled and sliced into thin rounds
- 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
- 1 tsp minced ginger
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp rice wine
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 lb of shrimp, thawed (raw or fully cooked, depending on what you want to do)
Instructions
Set your Instant Pot to saute.
Next, take and add the garlic and sesame oil to your Instant Pot.
Cook garlic until lightly browned.
Once that is done, you're going to add your noodles to the Instant Pot.
Add your vegetables on top of the noodles. (if you want to add in some more veggies, this is your chance!)
In a medium bowl, add chicken broth, ginger, red pepper flakes, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine and brown sugar. Stir all the ingredients to combine them together.
Once you have it mixed together, take and pour your sauce into the pot on top of the vegetables.
Seal your Instant Pot.
Set to Instant Pot to manual, high pressure, for 5 minutes.
When Instant Pot is done cooking, do a quick release and remove the lid after all the pressure is let out from the Instant Pot. (This will take a few minutes so it's a good idea to let the quick release do it's thing and move on to start cooking up the shrimp)
During this time, it's time to cook your shrimp. I like to cook them seperate on the stove as it's just really simple and I want to make certain that they're cooked. In a skillet, I put a little bit of oil in it and turn it to medium heat. Then, add in the shrimp until it's cooked fully, usally aout 2-3 minutes per side.
Once your shrimp is fully cooked, take and add your shrimp into the Instant Pot with all the other ingredients.
Stir the noodles with the shrimp several times.
You will see that the water is evaporating.
Allow to sit for 10 minutes.
Garnish with chives and red pepper flakes.
