I’m nearing 34…almost halfway to 40, but still closer the 30.  Whew.  I still feel young, but am starting to realize that I’m feeling some of the “growing” pains that my elders talk about all the time.  The popping knees, the eyesight issues….they are all present in my life.  Each morning, I feel as though I’ve been sleeping on a rock because of how sore my joints and body is.  Ugh, I’m not ready to grow up.  I’ve failed at preparing myself for this phase in life.

I began thinking about how old I truly am when I was trying to explain something to my daughters, and they had no idea what I was even talking about. How is it possible that they had no idea what a CD Disc player was?  Well, maybe because they were born after it was invented.  WAY after.

Once I realized all the things that they had no idea what they were, I started wondering about age and my life.  What items am I older than?  Well, there are a ton, but here at 5 that shocked me!

5 Items that I’m Older Than?

  1.  Facebook.  I knew it hadn’t been around for forever, but it sure feels like it.  Facebook is only 14 years old. A mere pup.  Yet, it has chronicled what feels like the time span of my entire life.  Interesting.
  2. I’m older than text messaging.  Seriously?  I can’t even remember how I communicated with people before I was able to text them.  Smoke signals?  Physically walking to their house?
  3. DVD’s.  I’m older than DVD’s….let that sink in.  That hurts.
  4. Google.  How can this be?  My motto in life is “Google it.” You mean that I’ve been taking advice from something that is younger than me for the past decade?  Amazing.
  5. DNA fingerprinting.  Well, actually we are the same age on this one but still mind-boggling to think that this phenomenon of science is only a mere 33 years old.  So new in its discovery while me at the same age is half-way through with my own discovery.

Some days, I think I’m having an early mid-life crisis in life.  I know that life is good, and I know that my life is VERY good.  I don’t want or need for anything, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.  BUT…when I think about all the things in the world that I feel like have been around for forever and then it turns out I’m older than them, it blows my mind.  Seriously, I’m older than Google??  I can’t get over that.  Of course, I’m trusting Google with those dates because they are the ones that fed me that information.  Touche, Google…touche.

Are there things in your life that you can’t believe you are older than?  Spill the beans.  I divulged my list, now it’s your turn!

I’m also always surprised at how young Facebook is. lol 😂

I’m probably older than most technology, however, what really surprises me is how many people say they are technologically challenged, of all ages. To me, that is not a badge of honor in 2018. Not for years, quite frankly.

Haha yep me too! Older than DVDs is especially depressing, but also pretty cool that we have been around for this long! I try to see age as a privilege these days, although hurtling towards 40 is pretty depressing!

I don’t know what I’m older than (and don’t want to look it up!) but I do know that I always try and explain what texting or emails are to my kids (mummy has a message on her phone) – they totally know what a text is without my explanations of ‘new technology’ but would probably be totally stumped if they saw a tape!

LOL, nooooooo. I can’t do that Thena, it would take forever, but it does make you think about how much has changed over the years and how reliant we’ve become on technology. Scary, but that’s our new reality

HAHAHA! I hear you! The other day I saw this thing on facebook of songs that came out 20 years ago. I started shaking my head. I was like “You’re kidding me?!” Partially because I had myself convinced in my mind that I was much older when those songs came out and then also just trying to wrap my head around the fact that I can remember 20 years ago. I remember, 20 years ago, trying to fathom what it would be like to say “20 years ago” after hearing my parents talk about my lifetime x2 as if it were yesterday.

It’s actually funny when you think about the things that we grew up with and how technology changed and we changed together with it. How we started using our first computers for play only and how we don’t imagine our lives without one now. I am older than Google as well, and much older than Facebook.

I feel a bit like this when I see what famous people have achieved and some of them were born in the 90s! Males me feel like I’ve washed some opportunities in my life. I remember the whole evolution of blogging and even have a liveJournal page….

  9. Karrie Frost says:

Oh Gosh, this post was a lot of fun to read. Particularly because I am in the same age bracket as you. I feel young until I see/listen to someone in their twenties, and am quickly reminded how old I am 🙁

Lol I’m just a year older than you, so I feel you! I was talking to a friend (early 20s) last year.. I made a reference to Patrick Swayze. I suddenly remembered his age & said, “you do know who that is, don’t you?” He admitted he didn’t and I said “Oh, you ARE a baby!” 😂😂

First of all, you are absolutely hilarious! Thank you for the laugh you just gave me ^^ And then just got scared a bit, I am too older than Google. HOW? How did I live before that, where was I searching for things??

  12. Shell says:

Hahaha what a fun and cute post! I loved reading this so much! 🙂 Older than DVD’s? I’m right there with you and I remember 8 track tapes LOL

  13. Preet says:

Totally loved this post, and I can so much relate to you on these, we are in the same age group. Wow, thinking about being older than google and facebook is a different feeling…. but we are so much dependent on technology, facebook and google have become like family members now. Life was indeed not like this in the past.

You always have the best way of looking at things *hugs* Those things are older than me too.. My niece asked me the other day what my fave film was when I was going up, I KNEW my mum still had the VHS with the tape and proper case so I ran to show her.. Oh man did I feel OLD. I would like to think that Google’s wisdom and knowledge automatically makes it older than us, no what!

What an interesting post to read. My mom also uses Facebook even though she’s in 60’s to communicate with our family relatives. and age doesn’t matter in using Facebook or Google.

  16. Agnes Vazhure says:

This is such a great post to read. It made my day. I think Facebook, Google, and Text Messaging everyone can use it even when we are older. We need it in our daily lives, to communicate with our loved ones, to get news every day.

  17. Amber says:

HA! I remember when my father introduced me to Google. It was a life-changer. I’m older than 4 of the 5 things you listed. Amazing to see how far things have quickly advanced, huh?

  18. Nina says:

I am older than all of these things as well. However many of them came to be as I transitioned to college. So they came about as I went from one drastic stage to another. I cannot imagine adulthood without texting, e-mail and social media. I cannot imagine childhood with all of those things.

  19. Elizabeth O says:

Oh wow, now I am sat wondering all the things I am older. I am headed to Google after this.. which I am probably older than haha! Great post. 🙂
